Where Crap Quarterbacks Dominate

The game is simple. Choose a starting NFL QB each week (anytime before kickoff of the first game). The worse your QB performs, the better. There are only two categories- Most INTs and lowest Passer Rating. The two winners at the end of the year will win...something.

*You cannot use a quarterback more than once during the season. It's ok. There are a lot of bad ones out there, and many are sure to be injured or benched.

Year in Review

As we approach the final week of the NFL season, let us reflect on this noble, yet partially flawed experiment we like to call: "Leave it Delhomme: Crappy QB Suicide Pool." Come to think of it, the name itself was one of the problems. It's clunky. It sucks. I mean, it is not a true suicide pool to begin with right? Since no one is bounced until the playoffs. Many dilemmas we're solved along the way including: "What if my guys gets hurt?" "What if so and so doesn't start?" and "Why haven't you kept an updated list of all the picks I made?" Still, a better game name was never decided upon.

For many of the 40 competitors the story of the season was the same (I was begged to join, made a few picks when reminded the first couple of weeks, forgot, then lost interest and crapped out). However,I suspect that the few who persevered each experienced a unique journey filled with surprise, intrigue and pure elation (Todd Collins anyone?).

My Week 1 selection was Vince Young, one of many big name QBs who ended up missing a significant portion of the season. He posted a PER upwards of 140 for me and set me in last place. As the weeks wore on I climbed my way all the way back into the hunt, thanks in no small part to everyone in my division losing interest and failing to make a selection. It got so I thought I actually had a shot in the playoffs last week and narrowed my list down to twelve potential candidates. I then evaluated each player based on the following categories: 1. Are they playing a team with a good pass defense? 2. Does their opponent have something to play for? 3. Are they on the road? 4. Will the game be played in bad weather? 5. Does their team have a good running game? I finally decided on Carson Palmer over Colt McCoy (who burned me once earlier in the year). Carson put up a near perfect rating and totally screwed me.

Anyway, enough about me and onto the awards:

MVP (participant) Carolanne Wipfli's husband
Of course she made the picks herself! Girls understand everything that goes down in a football match.

MVP (player) Jimmy Clausen
Did you know he only threw two touchdown passes all year? Two!
Runner up: Derek Anderson ("I put my heart and soul into this! Nothing's funny!")

Could Have Been a Contender Award: Joel Kretzinger
Joel crapped out on us, but every time he made a pick, he was spot on.
Runners up: Matt Schneider, Dustin Thomas

The Tom Brady Award: Basti Fabricius
Unlike most participants with high numbers, Basti (and btw this is bullshit that I am calling you Basti, you are Sab) made a selection every week. He just made the wrong ones. I remember one particularly bad Jason Campbell week.
Runner Up: Mike Brittingham
On the flip side, Mike was like bizarro Tom Terrific in that he couldn't throw a touchdown pass (good for our league of course). I think he made it almost to week 10 which is pretty astounding. Of course, Mike's wife went ahead and gave birth during the season and he was never heard from again.

The Brett Favre Award: Robert Lussier
My father in law asked me to join and I was skeptical because I thought no way in the world he would make a pick every week. Sure enough, he ends up coming through with a selection every week and was working all the younger kids with one of the best scores in the league. He had a high seed for the playoffs and neglected to make a pick.
Runner Up: Mike Frey
This wily veteran put up solid numbers, but just couldn't seem to catch up to Carolanne's husband.

Performance of the Year: Todd Collins Week 5 6/16 32 yards OTDs 4INTs 6.2 PER
Runner Up: Jason Campbell Week 6 8/21 83 yards OTDs 2INTs 10.7 PER
A lot of people cashed in with Collins' epic fail, but only Dustin Thomas followed it up with Campbell the following week.

Finally, congrats to Paul Markt of the Ryan Leaf Conference and Josh Anspach of the Chris Weinke Conference for making it to the Toiled Bowl. Looking forward to hearing your selections for the big game. Who will the Tim Couch jersey go to?

Lastly, the season in pictures (I'll add some more that are on my work computer tomorrow)...

Round 3 Playoff Assignments

Both #1 seeds selected Jimmy Clausen (the same pick that broke the hearts of two high seeds last week) who turned in a gross 33.2 PER in Pittsburgh Thursday night. It is going to take a near day-after-Christmas miracle for anyone to pass them, but with the QBs listed below, I would not be surprised. Here are the assignments and remember, only the lowest score from each conference will advance.

Weinke Conference

1. Wipfli- Jimmy Clausen (33.2)
2. Ostrom- Joe Webb (87.8)
3. Anspach- Colt McCoy (27.0)
4. Fehlman- Matt Hasselbeck (89.6)

1. Markt- Jimmy Clausen (33.2)
2. Hartley- Joe Webb (87.8)
3. Boyd- Carson Palmer (157.2)
4. Jensen- Ryan Fitzpatrick (37.1)

You may choose a QB you have already used during the season, but please give me your selection by Saturday so that I can let everyone know who they are pulling for and against.

Round 2 Playoff Seeding

Sort of an anti-climactic first round as everyone who submitted a score advanced. I kind of figured that would happen, but for those of you who read the fine print and understood every participant makes the playoffs, congrats.

Only three from each conference (not including the conference champs who have byes) will advance to round 3. Remember, if you are a number 5 seed, that means you need to send me a wish list of QBs with #1 being the guy you want the most. Be sure to put them in the correct order because if a higher seeded player selects your #1, you will get your #2. If your #1 and #2 are selected by a higher seed in your conference, I will move to your #3 and so on. Also, as a reminder, you can select QBs you have used during the season or even in a previous playoff round.

The seedings:

Weinke Conference
Carolanne Wipfli-bye (Regular Season Conference Champ)
1. Mike Frey
2. Jake McClean
3. Tor Ostrom
4. Josh Anspach
5. Sonny Fehlman

Leaf Conference
Paul Markt-bye (Regular Season Conference Champ)
1. Scott Hartley
2. Dustin Thomas
3. Eli McCarrell
4. Andrew Howard
5. Joe Boyd
6. Brian Jensen
7. Basti Fabricius

Should be a lot of fun this week. There are so many bad QBs out there that it really could go any way. Interested to see how it turns out.

As a reminder to everyone, I have copied and pasted the playoff format below.

-Every team makes the playoffs

-Round 1 of the playoffs is week 14 of the regular season (December 12)

-The "Toilet Bowl" (championship match up between the winner of the Weinke Conference and the winner of the Leaf Conference) will be week 17- the last week of the regular season.

-The two conference winners will have byes for the first 2 rounds of the playoffs. The other 3 division winners in each conference have one bye (see previous post for division placements)

-Before the start of the first week of the playoffs, each person will rank all of the current starting QBs (#1 is the person you would like most. #32 is Tom Brady- someone like him. Obviously, if you are the #1 seed, you only need to make a list of one QB, #2 seed 2QBs and so on. The #16 seed should rank 16 QBs in order to be safe. Got it?). If you do not submit a list by midnight Saturday night, you will be eliminated.

-I will assign you your QB for each round of the playoffs (remember this is our play-offs not the NFLs. It will still be during their regular season) based on the list you provide. The person with the best score during the regular season gets first choice, the next best record goes after and so on and so forth. Remeber, I need those lists ASAP so I can let everyone know who their assigned QB is. Midnight Saturday at the latest.

-Your score will be determined by your assigned QB's Passing Efficiency Rating for that game

-For the first round of the playoffs, the six participants with the lowest scores from each conference advance

-For the second round of the playoffs, the top 3 teams advance

-For the third round of the playoffs, only the conference winner advances

-The two conference champs will face-off in the "Toilet Bowl"

I hope this doesn't sound too confusing for everyone. If you have any questions, let me know.

Week 11 Standings

A list of participants who did not make a selection this week (please notify me if I am mistaken and I will make the necessary adjustments): Bierman, Bolthouse, Brittingham, Burroughs, Engdahl, Fabricius (sorry, I know you picked Jason Campbell, but you had already selected him. If I had seen it earlier I would have told you), Hedrick, Johnson, Kearcher, Kretzinger, Long, Longbucco, McCarrick, O'Brien, Sapper, Schneider, Shoenecker, Thomas, Wrightman

As you can see, that is damn near half of us which means that if you simply make your pick each week, there is a good chance you will climb the ladder and win the sweet sweet Tim Couch (or somelike) jersey.

Week 10 Standings

Rough week this time around. Ten people rode Jon Kitna to 327 yards and 3 touchdowns against only one pick. Even the reliable Jimmy Clausen failed to throw an INT. Can you believe that only 8 participants have more INTs than TDs? I have to admit that I thought this game would be a lot easier. Unfortunately, there have been to many people forgetting to make a pick, and therefore, most of the numbers are skewed.

The list of people who failed to make a pick for week 10:

Bolthouse
Engdahl
Fehlman
Hedrick
C. Johnson
Kearcher
Kretzinger
Longbucco
McCarrick
O'Brien
Pugh
Sapper
Shoenecker
Thomas
Wrightman

If I am wrong with any of these names, please correct me. We have 4 weeks left until the playoffs and all it takes is another Todd Collins-like performance to turn this thing into high gear for most people- so don't forget this week!

And now for the standings:

Notes/Stat Leaders

-Our overall leader is Joel Kretzinger with a PER of . Joel was honeymooning in Europe during the first three weeks of the season and gave me his picks before he left. How does it make you feel to know that I guy who didn't get to watch a down is beating us all down?

-I am no mathematician, and I don't really even look at the PER equation- just plug the numbers into the program- but it seems to me that yards don't really matter, completion percentage matters a little bit and touchdowns and interceptions mean everything.

-I am in 39th place out of 40 at the moment (thanks for neglecting to make a pick last week Wrightman!). I think that my problem is that the my pick's coaches know how bad they suck, so they call a conservative game plan and run the ball all game. Or they complete tons of short stupid passes that the defenses give them. Like I said, yards don't matter.

-Not watching the games is killing me. For instance, a lot of people had DA for week one and he had a decent (for this game) 85 PER or something. Almost 300 yards, no INTs, but all I heard about was how awful he was. I guess there is something to be said for watching the games live. Also, I have heard that Carson Palmer has already had about a dozen dropped INTs.

-Seneca Wallace burned a lot of people last week (myself included). The numbers looked decent, but there is no way he could have had a good game right?

-If you chose Dixon for week 2 I gave you credit for his performance and that of Charlie Batch. Good for you.

-OK that's enough. Here are statistical leaders if you care:

INTs
Hartley-7
Lussier-7
Kretzinger-6
McClean-6
3 tied at 5

TDs
Brittingham- 0
Kearcher-0
Burroughs-1
Howard-1
McClean-1

Completion %
Kretzinger- 38.5%
Kearcher- 49.1%
O'Brien- 52.4%
McCarrick- 53%
Howard- 53.4%

Biggest Losers:
Bolthouse (6TDs)
Long, Anspach, Fabricious (0INTs)
Thomas (69.1% completions)

Looking Ahead- Week 2 and 3

-Thanks to everyone who has sent me picks so far for Week 2. Remember, I am not going to be able to remind everyone next week so please be sure to send in your week 3 picks before the start of the game or you know the punishment- 10/10 200 2TDs 0INTs. Also, I will not be posting the updated scores until after week 3.

-Still waiting on Week 2 picks from the following people:

-Casey Hedrick
-Ryan Sapper
-Basti Fabricious
-Matt Schneider
-Matt McCarrick

-Once we get into this game a little deeper, I will post everyone's past selections to make it easier for you to avoid duplicates. As for now, you're on your own.

-To clarify, if you pick a QB and he doesn't end up starting the game, unless I hear from you otherwise, I will assign you his back-up. You may still use the initial QB you attempted to pick if he starts a game later in the year.

-Vote in the new Reggie Bush poll and please send me poll suggestions as I lose creativity quickly (those of you in my NBA Fantasy League can attest to that).

-Again, so everyone knows I am not cheating, I will reveal my Week 2 pick: Sam Bradford. Yes he's going against the same Oakland D that Vince surgically destroyed, but the rookie had a lot of attempts last game, so I am counting on a ton of incompletions to make up for VY's 14 for 17 last week.

-Which reminds me, at least two of you selected Vince Young for Week 2. I guess you think last week was a fluke. If you are right I will hate you.

-Lots of Shaun Hills so far. No Mike Vicks. Also popular this week: Matt Moore, Trent Edwards (again) and Dennis Dixon. Man there are a lot of bad ones out there. Nexy year, I might make you pick two per week.

-GO DUCKS!

Week 1 Wrap Up

A few thoughts and observations on Week 1.

-I suck. I can't believe I rolled the dice with Vince Young and am just shocked that he busted out a 142.8. In hindsight, he's never been an accurate passer and seems to have a PER of somewhere around 80 on his very best days. The crazy thing is that I am still considering going with Sam Bradford who faces the same defense Vince did, although he'll be on the road. Stupid. I should have gone with Mark Sanchez or Brett Favre just because I hate them.

-Two players chose Matt Moore. Awesome job.

-The Cade McNown Division seems to be the most competative. Click here for the full Week 1 standings.

-Two quarterbacks were knocked out in the first half of Week 1 meaning that their respective back-up's stats came into play. This worked out well for Tommy Murata, who had Matt Stafford, but not so much for David Bolthouse who had Kevin Kolb. Kolb was having a really shitty first half (good in this game) before Clay Matthews bounced his head off the turf like a red rubber four-square ball. You know the sound those things make against cement right? Remember, the rule is that if your QB gets benched or injured in the first half and does not return for the second- you take on the backup's stats. If your QB goes down in the second half, you only get credit for the starter.

-Some of you have inquired about fumbles. I admit that I should have thought of that at first, but I didn't so we are going to ignore them for this year.

-Also, I have received a few suggestions regarding Division names. I kind of like the way they are now, but if you send me one that fits, I may decide to use it.

-Five best picks used in Week 1: Matt Moore (32.6), Jake Delhomme (59.2), Joe Flacco (62.2), Matt Cassel (68.0), Jason Campbell (69.7)

-Five best picks NOT used in Week 1: Alex Smith (52.5), Sam Bradford (53.1), Mark Sanchez (56.4), Donovan McNabb (63.4), Matt Schaub (67.5)

-Idiot picks of Week 1: Vince Young (142.8), Matt Hasselbeck (108.3), Jay Cutler (108.3), Carson Palmer (92.5)

-Former Oregon Duck news: How about P. Chung racking up 16 tackles in his first start for New England? Love it. Also, I didn't get to watch the game, but looking at the numbers, it looked like Haloti dominated once again. I haven't had a favorite NFL team in years (players move around too much), but as long as my all-time favorite Duck lines up for Baltimore, I'll go with the Ravens.

-That's about all for week 1. Please be sure to get your picks in before the games start. I will try and remind you all, but next week I will be on vacation and am not sure if I will have any internet access. The next set of standings will not be posted until after Week 3.

Send in your picks either through Facebook, a comment in this blog, or e-mail joe.boyd82@gmail.com

Week 1 Pre-game Notes

A quick rundown of thoughts leading up to week 1:

-As of right now, there are 38 participants. I tried to organize it so that each participant at least knows a few of the others inside their division. I had a nice even 36 with 6 divisions of 6, but 2 a-holes got back to me late and just had to be included. I am punishing them and the rest of the Collier Hall boys be putting them in a super division of 8.

-Trent Edwards was by far the most popular pick for week 1. Nearly one out of every four participants picked Trent. In fact, two participants even picked Trent's back-ups- Brian Brohm and Ryan Fitzpatrick, proving that it doesn't matter who lines up under center for the Bills because they are dogsuck.

I mean Chan Gailey? Are you serious? Didn't anyone in their organization see Hard Knocks Dallas a couple of years back?

-Two participants (Ostrom and Levin) chose Brett Favre who played in the Thursday night game. I was seriously debating this pick. He finished with a mediocre line of 15/27 171 yards a teeder and a pick for a PER of 71.7. Not the best as far as this league is concerned but not bad for rolling the dice.

-Here is the breakdown of picks for week 1:

Trent Edwards (9)
Dennis Dixon (4)
Derek Anderson (4)
Matt Cassel (3)
Joe Flacco (3)
Matt Hasselbeck (3)
Brett Favre (2)
Matt Moore (2)
Vince Young (2)
Jason Campbell (1)
Jay Cutler (1)
Jake Delhomme (1)
Kevin Kolb (1)
Kyle Orton (1)
Carson Palmer (1)
Matt Stafford (1)

-The winner of the last poll question "Which Participant has the Best QB Name?" was Jake McClean. I thought about making the second poll "Who Has the Worst QB Name?" but then Carolanne Wipfli joined and removed all doubt.

The new poll question is "What is the Biggest Roll of the Dice for Week 1?" please be sure to vote. *Note- I just added another poll question: "Who was the biggest omission of Week 1?"

A couple more housekeeping items:

-I am really worried about people not getting me their picks for a week or skipping weeks. As I said before, the punishment will be a 10 for 10, 200 yard 3TD 0INT line.

-Also if you choose a QB and he ends up not starting, unless I hear different from you beforehand, I will assign you his back-up

-Lastly, if your QB is knocked out or benched during the first half, you will take on the stats of the back-up for the rest of the game. If he is knocked out or benched in the 2nd half, I will only take the selected QB's stats. Got it?

Sorry if you don't like that rule, but chances are your guy's replacement is gonna be crap too so it shouldn't hurt.

Playoff Format

-Every team makes the playoffs

-Round 1 of the playoffs is week 14 of the regular season (December 12)

-The "Toilet Bowl" (championship match up between the winner of the Weinke Conference and the winner of the Leaf Conference) will be week 17- the last week of the regular season.

-The two conference winners will have byes for the first 2 rounds of the playoffs. The other 3 division winners in each conference have one bye (see previous post for division placements)

-Before the start of the first week of the playoffs, each person will rank all of the current starting QBs (#1 is the shittiest, or person you would like most. #32 is Peyton Manning- someone like him. Got it?). If you do not submit a list, you will forfeit your position and your QB will be chosen based on my list (basic order of NFL QB PER) which will take into account the order of all participants who also failed to send in a list and QBs already taken.

-I will assign you your QB for each round of the playoffs (remember this is our play-offs not the NFLs. It will still be during their regular season) based on the list you provide. The person with the best score during the regular season gets first choice, the next best record goes after and so on and so forth.

-Your regular score will be determined by your accumulated Passing Efficiency Rating

-For the first round of the playoffs, the six teams with the lowest scores from each conference advance

-For the second round of the playoffs, the top 3 teams advance

-For the third round of the playoffs, only the conference winner advances

-The two conference champs will face-off in the "Toilet Bowl"

I hope this doesn't sound too confusing for everyone. If you have any questions, let me know.

Basically, just worry about sending me your picks each week. If you are gonna be on vacation or something, be sure to send me your picks for the weeks that you are going to miss also. I need to think of a penalty for not sending in your picks. Right now I am thinking of a 10 for 10, 200 yards, 2TDs and no interceptions line to sub for the week you miss. Sound good?
